Hello, I’m Katie Leigh
A Trauma-Informed Advisor for Leaders
Early in my career, long before I knew what a trauma-informed advisor was. I sat in a room of respected leaders facing what felt like an impossible situation. Intelligent people, in the weight of the moment, had narrowed vision. Confusion dominated. It was no longer about intent, but proximity. So, outside experts brought in carefully crafted strategies, yet the problem only grew. Then a leader who had not been involved earlier suddenly arrived.
He asked each person to share their perspective. Even I, the quiet newcomer in the corner. He listened and then instructed that a direct meeting be scheduled with the complainants. When they arrived, they didn’t want a fight; they wanted to be heard. For others, not to be treated the same way. He acknowledged their experience. Asked what resolution looked like to them. Then he also asked for their help in finding solutions. Not once did he defend or deflect. He listened beyond the facts and kept his promises. When the situation ended, relationships remained, improved procedures were implemented, and the issue was resolved with minimal cost. This leader introduced what had been missing all along: humanity.
That day reshaped my understanding of leadership. I saw that clarity dispels confusion, and solutions can emerge from heartfelt listening. To this day, that leader’s example still guides my work.
How We Lead, Especially in Crisis, Matters!
Where Clarity Meets Courageous Care
For more than 20 years, I’ve sat in rooms most people never want to be in. Not all have had such smooth outcomes; many have been complex. Yet, I’ve learned that the leaders who navigate those moments best aren’t the ones with the most impressive titles. They are the ones who maintain clarity when confusion is spinning. That is what I help leaders do:
- Gain Clarity Amid Confusion
- Bring Calm to Chaos
- Courage in Moments of Crisis
Working across nonprofit, business, political, and law-adjacent environments, I have learned to integrate trauma-informed approaches with organizational processes. I have gradually increased my work as a trauma-informed advisor as opportunities continued to present themselves. Helping leaders and professionals manage risk, navigate crisis, and uphold accountability without sacrificing humanity or integrity. Much of my work has taken place in complex human situations where policy, process, and leadership decisions directly affect people’s lives.
Why I Chose a Trauma-Informed Approach?
Trauma-informed is not a buzzword. It is a clinical framework grounded in decades of research. How adverse experiences affect the brain, body, behavior, and the systems people operate within.
Nearly 80% of major social issues stem from childhood trauma. The problems leaders face today: conflict, disengagement, mental health, crisis response. These problems are often rooted in factors they were never equipped to see. Trauma-informed approaches empowers leaders, organizations, and teams with insight and practical tools. By understanding root causes, we can respond in ways that produce better outcomes.
When people feel safe, seen, and supported within a system, they perform better, stay longer, and contribute more fully. A people-centered culture is not just the right thing to build, it is the most effective one. And trauma-informed leadership is the framework that makes it possible.
Over the past decade, I pursued extensive trauma-informed training beyond my work in HR and risk management. I sought tools and mentorship not only in organizational systems, but in the realities of human harm and recovery. Through this work, I became a Credentialed Advocate (CA) and Comprehensive Victim Intervention Specialist (CVIS) under the National Organization for Victim Assistance (NOVA). A Court Appointed Special Advocate under CASA. And a Child-Centered Forensic Interviewer (CCFI) under the National Association of Certified Child Forensic Interviewers (NACCFI).
If something here resonates, I’d love to connect. There is no obligation, just a conversation to see if my services make sense for where you are right now.
