The Cost of Clergy Abuse: $2 Million

A professional legal or consulting setting with papers and a gavel, representing high-stakes crisis management.

$2 million is the median cost of a single child sexual abuse allegation at a religious organization. Not including lost donations or damage to the church’s reputation. The immeasurable cost to the victim’s life, their family, or the ripple effect across an entire congregation is immense.

Clergy abuse is not a crisis occurring elsewhere for someone else. It is happening now in the Body of Christ, and the cost of inaction has never been clearer.

THE WEIGHT WE CARRY

Between 2004 and 2023, Catholic dioceses in the United States alone spent more than $5 billion addressing sexual abuse allegations. Three-fourths of that, $3.77 billion, went directly to victims. More than two dozen dioceses filed for bankruptcy. Though the financial cost is staggering, the spiritual devastation cannot be measured.

Approximately 12% of all child sexual abuse cases nationwide are perpetrated by a leader within the church. Of those victims, the vast majority were initially psychologically abused as well. They were groomed, manipulated, and spiritually weaponized against. Evil loves to cloak itself in goodness, and naivety in the church makes a perfect place to hide.

clergy sex abuse statistics of children in the united state

America has nearly 60 million survivors of child sexual abuse, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. That’s approximately 20% of our population. This shocking statistic does not include the 2/3rd of victims who never disclose at all. Many experts believe as many as 180 million survivors of child sex abuse are in the U.S. Which is more than the number of people who voted in the 2024 presidential election.

Clergy abuse accounts for 12% of these figures, that is, between 7 and 22 million. Compared with the largest 3 denominations in the United States, we can assess the scale of the problem.

3 Largest Denominations in the US

  1. The Catholic Church: 61.9 million
  2. Southern Baptist Convention: 16.1 million
  3. The United Methodist Church: 7.8 million

THE POWER DIFFERENTIAL: WHY CLERGY ABUSE IS UNIQUELY DESTRUCTIVE

Clergy abuse is also known as clergy misconduct. Occurring when an individual in a religious position uses their influence to cause or allow spiritual, psychological, or physical harm. Including: pastors, priests, staff members, elders, deacons, worship leaders, department heads, ordained ministers, and spiritual teachers.

Why does this definition matter? The clergy’s influence and knowledge of people’s intimate lives create a unique power dynamic. They are seen as counselors, guides to the ways of God, and keepers of spiritual truth. This gives ill-intentioned members of the clergy a unique ability to entangle their targets, and the broader community, with covert forms of coercive control:

  • Manipulation
  • Exploitation
  • Censorship
  • Secrecy
  • Silence
  • Shame-based use of Scripture
  • Conformity is enforced through peer groups
  • A superior or elitist exaltation of leaders.

Great power comes with great responsibility. The Biblical standard for Christian leaders is high. Our definition of abuse must be broad enough to capture the full scope of harm.

TWO WAYS TO RESPOND: PREVENTION AND POST-TRAUMA CARE

There are only two ways to deal with clergy abuse: prevention and post-trauma care. Most churches are unprepared for both. Until now.

Prevention: Building a Culture of Discernment

Prevention is not about suspicion or fear. It is about clarity, responsibility, and early action. Most educational resources lack a focus on practical prevention-based skills that reveal early indicators of “wolf behavior.” Both leaders and congregations require education on prevention-based approaches to prevent all forms of abuse within their communities.

This includes:

  • Recognizing boundary violations before they escalate
  • Understanding grooming tactics used by covert actors
  • Training leadership teams on power differentials
  • Implementing accountability that protects both congregants and leaders
  • Creating transparent reporting mechanisms that invite disclosure without fear

Churches that invest in prevention communicate a powerful message to their people: Your safety matters to us, and to God.

Post-Trauma Care: A Jesus-Centered Response

Victims and congregants need professional and individualized post-trauma care. They need a safe, professional third party to share their stories with and hold accountable.

Church leaders need guidance. They require an experienced third party to whom to refer victims. Someone who can independently investigate and provide external accountability through victim-centered approaches and biblically based restorative action plans.

This is not about protecting the institution. It is about caring for the wounded with the heart of Jesus.

When institutions, their leadership, and congregations commit to public accountability, we bring healing to the hurting and prevent future harm.

THE BIBLICAL IMPERATIVE FOR ACCOUNTABILITY

Common-sense Biblical accountability is essential for a healthy church. Uninformed and opinion-based reactions only add fuel to the fire of the growing problem of clergy abuse. We believe the Biblical standard demands more than good intentions. It demands action.

When leaders choose to step into the light, embrace accountability, and model people-centered approaches. We present the gospel and lead the way for a watching world.

This is stewardship. This is shepherding. This is what it means to protect the flock entrusted to our care.

THE COST OF SILENCE VS. THE COST OF ACTION

Let’s return to that $2 million figure.

That’s not just a financial liability. It represents years of legal battles, public scrutiny, congregational division, and leadership paralysis. It represents a victim’s life altered forever. It represents families who walk away from the faith entirely because the church failed to protect them.

Now consider the alternative.

Churches that invest in prevention, accountability, and trauma-informed care experience:

  • Lower risk of any type of abuse occurring
  • Increased confidence among members in safety measures
  • Heightened safety and awareness across leadership and congregants
  • Greater parishioner retention and annualized giving
  • Restored credibility in a culture that watches how we respond to harm

The cost of prevention is always lower than the cost of crisis.

But more than that, it is the right thing to do. It honors God. It protects His people. It reflects the character of Christ.

THE PATH FORWARD

If you are a church leader reading this, you already know something is wrong. You feel the weight of responsibility. You recognize the gap between where your church is and where it needs to be.

You are not alone.

At Katie Leigh Advisory, we provide trauma-informed consulting and crisis navigation services tailored to faith communities. We assist churches in building prevention systems, responding to allegations with integrity, and restoring trust after harm has occurred.

This work is not easy. But it is essential.

The Body of Christ must be a place of safety, healing, and hope. Not a hiding place for those who would do harm.

Together, we can restore discernment and the fear of God to the church. We can spark courageous leaders, empower congregations to seek accountability, and help victims find the care they deserve.

The cost of doing nothing is too high. The call to action is clear.

This is the first in a series exploring clergy abuse, trauma-informed ministry, and the path to restoration within the Church. A full-length book on this topic will be released later this year.
